It is well known that sports activities at this university have earned a good name for Aligarh all over the country. Ghaus Mohammad in Tennis, Mushtaq Ali, Lala Amaranth, Wazir Ali and Nazir Ali in Cricket, Hamid and Mazhar Olympians in Athletic and Shakoor in Hockey are names that will always bring pride to any and arouse nostalgic feeling in those who were personally  acquainted with these individuals, their sports and the institutions. It is difficult to even imagine that in the Twenties and Thirties M.C.C. and Australian Test Cricketers played against AMU at Aligarh and the university had been champions and Runner-up in Inter-varsity tournaments on several occasions in Thirties and Forties. The University Athletic team had won the combined all India inter-varsity team championships trophy in Forties. In Football, the university has won Inter-varsity finals several times.

In hockey, the team achievement had been perhaps, the greatest. The university had won more than once Agha Khan Gold Cup, Scindia Gold Cup, Beighton Cup and several other All India Tournaments. Its inter-varsity record was also remarkable till the Fifties.

Looking back over the recent past the university has produced some great individual players in Hockey like Gursewak, Ali Saeed, Inamur Rehman, Govinda and, perhaps the best , Zafar Iqbal, and our Hockey team has come near the top in Inter-varsity tournaments for the last several years. The story is the same in other games like Football, Cricket, Basketball and Table-Tennis where the presence of some good players has allowed the university to re-enjoy some of its past glories, in Tennis also in seventies the University have won the Inter-varity championships. In 1985-86, the university Basketball team won the north zone championship and the All India Inter-varsity finalist Mr. Nasruddin Ali Saeed was declared best players of All India Inter-varsity tournament.
